Our first experience with assisted living, pluses and minuses.

The friendliness of the staff members varies a lot. The help is good but the management is sometimes not consistent. If our loved one has an issue or needs help we do not know who to get into contact with. They do not answer phone calls or their emails. Pre COVID when it came to the activities there was not a lot offered to the residents. The food was a bad experience, it could use some improvements. We do know there is a new chef, but we still do not know if those improvements have been made. Our loved one has a lovely room with a nice view of a small pond. The layout is great and is very functional.

Memory Care
August 4, 2018

My sister and I toured this one without our dad. The staff nurse thought that memory care would be the appropriate level for him. After touring both assisted living and memory care we disagreed. We feel that the memory care program is VERY good, and we may consider it later if dad should need that level of care. The memory program is broken down into three smaller units, so that residents have a group of around 8 to 12 peers in a dining area/living room area. There is an enclosed outside area that wraps around the end of the building in sort of a large U, with trees, benches, raised gardens, etc. When the weather is good, memory care residents can wander the gardens, including going around the end of the building and coming back into the closed unit at a different door. Our mother passed away last fall from Alzheimers and one of the things she liked to do for several years was to walk from place to place. If she encountered a door that lead out, she would escape or try to escape. When we placed her in a setting with no obvious outside doors, she wandered contentedly for hours. If she had been in the memory care unit at First Community, she could have wandered inside and outside at will without ever encountering an obvious exit. She would have loved that. We were not as impressed by the assisted living facilities and program. It just didn't 'feel' as good. Dad did spend several weeks in the skilled nursing facility at First Community this spring following a hospitalization. We HIGHLY recommend it! He was well cared for and did not mind being there. His experience at other rehab facilities, even very good ones, left him feeling angry and not willing to ever return.

Most of the staff are great, caring and competent. However, current management is absolutely incompetent. It is a nice facility, plenty of amenities and activities. It could be quite nice with a general manager who knows how to manage.

Good place, crummy parking space.

Things have been okay since my friend has moved to The Landings of St Andrew. She is having a difficult time adjusting though. The place is currently being remodeled. The A/C is old and it's warm in there but colder outside. The staff has been treating her well, she hasn't complained. They do not provide meals, they sometimes have donated food available. Sh edoes like the activities and has not had a problem with that. She got more than she thought she would from this place. It is a good place to look in to for an apartment. The parking is crummy, parking garage and they only have space for each resident, not much guest parking at all so it is hard to find a space.

They were a three. Historically they had high marks but we had a terrible experience. The first day she was there she fell and they blamed her for trying to get up. They didn't have her in the right wheelchair and they didn't have it locked. She fell and hit her head. She fell again, which caused bleeding on her brain, so the state went out to investigate. Another day we found her stuck between the bed and the wall. There were a lot of things. They weren't adequately trained to put her sling on. She had surgery on her shoulder and they couldn't put her arm in the sling and it was always hanging out of the sling. One day we found that her pills had fallen and were stepped on, so she didn't get her meds. There were always excuses. Great looking facility. Very poorly managed.

Everything's Going Pretty Well

My mother-in-law seems to be doing well there. It's a lovely little apartment. It's a full two bedroom apartment. They do have meals but so far she makes her own. I know they've had ice cream parties and introductions to people that work there and they've had concerts. She's been there about 4.5 to 5 months and I can't think of anything they can improve on yet. Everything seems to be going pretty well.

Lease cost manipulation. Annual

Resident of Madison Manor for over three years. When you sign your lease you should be aware that it is for one year only. After your first anniversary, your lease becomes a month to month lease which means your monthly lease can be increased, and is, every year thereafter The lease increases are significantly high. There is no backup generator to keep the elevator operating during a power failure. There is also no emergency lighting or exit door indicator like guts. This leaves you in total darkness in the hallways and stairwells on all floors except the first floor that has some available light from the lobby and community room due to windows. There are other issues but for me the annual rent increases is a major problem for fixed income.

Madison Manor Review

There's good and bad things ..so it has been a OK experience ....she still there, but the power has gone out more than a couple of times for several amount of days. They don't have a generator that runs the elevator. She's on a walker so that has been the biggest downfall of moving her there..trying to get her down to the first floor.. No working elevator, no lights in the stair well,, that has been a huge problem

They don't do no activities they don't do no meals they don't do anything except residence are not so friendly because they're so old you have to take your own trash out to the dumpster and it's not fun in the winter time for old people I wish I could find a place better than this but so far no luck I wouldn't recommend this place to no one.

Do not recommend

Staff is friendly, and they have regular activities. They have maintenance and janitorial, but the carpeting on the 2nd and 3rd floor halls is the ORIGINAL carpet, highly stained and smelly. There's only one elevator, in a bldg with many disabled folks. When the power goes out, they have no way to get down to the first floor. No back-up generator, no emergency lights. Pitch black. I think the carpeting I have in my apt is the ORIGINAL carpet, too. Couldn't get them to clean it. My rent just went up to over [fee removed] per month. Those of us on the upper floors whose balcony sliding glass doors face the west have super high electric bills during the summer months. There isn't much value for the money...and there's a virtual swamp behind the property. Madison HTS doesn't spray for mosquitoes, so trying to enjoy the balcony is fruitless. Sorry to say, but I wouldn't recommend Madison Manor to anyone, let alone seniors. I've been looking for another place.

Not a good place

I've lived here for 13yrs. and the first 6 was great but in the last 7yrs. this place has done nothing but go down hill. It's over run with roaches, bedbugs and who knows what else. I've told them several times about my carpet unraveling and nothing was done. I sit here 2 months last summer with no air conditioning until I called HUD then they got me a new one. Management had no interest in fixing the problems here. Washers and dryer stay basically broken except 2 or 3 at a time. Trying to get out of here as soon as I can afford it. Would not recommend.

Be careful

Bad experience. We had a nice sales consultant .The independent living spaces were perfect. All along as part of their sales pitch they stressed an openness to customizing. After a couple of discussions, which were put in writing each time we had our agreement. However, when I got the final letter I was shocked - nothing agreed upon was there. And I mean nothing PLUS costs were higher. The manager (who had been copied all along on everything) decided to ignore it all. She made the excuse that she hadn't been involved and thus the things we had agreed upon weren't something they did. She literally threw her salesperson under the bus. It was a huge red flag. Even if you have things in writing it appears that doesn't matter. Imagine once your loved one is already there. It was a total waste of time. Without trust what do you have?
