Memory care facilities are licensed as a specialized form of an assisted living community by the Georgia Department of Community Health’s Healthcare Facility Regulation Division (HFRD). This means they must adhere to all the same rules and regulations that govern assisted living communities, which cover everything from meal expectations and how care is provided to medication management and staff training.
In addition to those rules and regulations, additional requirements for memory care apply:
- The facility must have alerts on exit doors to ensure residents are not wandering off.
- The facility must provide a secured outdoor space for residents.
- Visual contrasts and adequate lighting that prevent shadows must be incorporated into the design of the memory care unit.
- Multipurpose common spaces must be available for dining and activities.
- Daily therapeutic activities must take place over the following areas: social activities, gross motor activities, outdoor activities, self-care activities, and sensory-enhancement activities.
