Great caregivers - patient and kind!
My sibling adores the caregivers, they pay a lot of attention to him. For activities, he tells me he has nothing to do. I know that's wrong. He just doesn't seem to want to participate. For value for cost, What can I say? Bottom line: he needs what you can provide and it's easy to see he is happy at Glen Oaks. He pays a lot and he gets a lot! He doesn't complain.

Overall a caring community for your loved one
Awesome and compassionate staff. It's a difficult job to do day after day. Some staff are better than others. I hit the call button in my mother in law's room and no one came after 10 minutes because she is incontinent. I am concerned what the call button is for. It was evening, which is a busy time there. Hopefully an emergency would be addressed in a timely manner. The meals are nothing special, but I'd rather spend more on quality care. I still ranked Glen Oaks high despite the call button experience, because it is quite busy in the center at night with all the sun downing patients. I am hoping if there was an emergency, we would be notified.

Glen Oaks takes very good care of Alzheimer's patients
Glen Oaks specializes in Alzheimer's Care and there is a definite difference between the care he is getting now which is Alzheimer's specific. If your loved one has Alzheimer's don't be fooled into just choosing a place called "Memory Care" because they are not capable of dealing with an Alzheimer's patient.

Our families experience
[name removed] had good care. She was there because her husband had Parkinson's dementia. So she really wasn't with her peers as far as normal mental status. We couldn't get her into a different facility. The staff recognized that and went above and beyond to build a relationship with [name removed]to make the best of her situation. Areas of improvement would be oral care, fingernail maintenance and possibly food choices. She gained quite a bit of weight while there, but she also isn't one to turn down food!. It was a good place. We we able to get into [community name removed] just this week.

A good rating for a hard choice
They promised the moon, but they don't deliver. They sure as heck try harder than the last place we were at. I know there have been several people from other places who have gone to Glen Oaks. I don't think they are great, but they're doing a lot better than the other choices we have in Des Moines.
I had a friend bring her father-in-law here; he's a really tough case and Glen Oaks does a great job on those really difficult clients. I give them a lot of credit for taking the hard cases. We can get kind of lost when we're also a hard case, but we're non-violent and can sit still. It's really hard, but they do a better job than other places. They're not perfect and they could come further up the ladder, but I give them a lot of credit for taking those hard case and for doing they best they can. I just wish they'd do better for my loved one.

Very Satisfied
Overall, the facility is clean and the staff is friendly. Staff turnover is fairly high, but I don't blame the facility. It's just a sign of the times. I'm much happier with my husband being here than when he was at home. This place has really helped him. I'm much less stressed and things are going good. I would recommend them to family and friends!

Peace of Mind
I would recommend Glen Oaks and their philosophy on caring for the residents. The residents are out of their rooms socializing with other residents or participating in activities. The staff are good to work with if the family has any questions or concerns about our loved one.
Medication management, dressing assistance, and transfers are some of the care types the community is able to assist with. They are good at assisting the residents.
The room, utilities, changing of linens, laundry, housekeeping, and more is included in the monthly rate.

Our families experience
We find the facility very clean. The permanent staff is wonderful and we consider them family, sometimes the outside staff that they bring in can be a hit or miss. We did have a turkey dinner meal there and that was really good, but other than that we do not have any other experience with the meals. The activities are not limited, they bring in special entertainment which is great. We like the fact the change things around every half hour - two or three times our loved one is getting physical therapy.

I really liked Glen Oaks, we could have easily gone with this facility as well. I enjoyed talking with the director and we got along well. I was impressed with how the staff were all interacting with the residents. Unfortunately they did not have any single rooms available at the time and due to my wife's condition, that was something she was going to need.

Good value for the price
The first impression of the facility is great, but things are not always perfect. Overall it has been a really good experience. We are especially pleased with activities, he is actually participating. For what he is getting the price is most impressive to us. I would recommend to others looking.

They meet our needs.
They've met our needs when we needed it. As my loved one's dementia journey is coming to an end, they seem to be able to meet all of the things we need them to do.
They do a good job at handling the advanced stages of dementia. The rooms seem to be set up effectively. They have a monitoring system to keep track of the patients, and there's always plenty of staff around to help. The food is wonderful as well.

Great facility
My Mother was admitted to Glen Oaks a month ago as Hospice wanted her to have a higher level of care. We are VERY happy with Glen Oaks. Workers speak when you walk in, RN is very caring and actually feeds residents HERSELF as do other workers. They have planned activities and do not let residents sit all day. Mom is eating, so presume food is very satisfying. Workers have mom clean and her hair done every day.

My mom never wants to leave
Glen Oaks has been absolutely amazing. We chose this facility because of the staff, I toured 10-12 dementia units in our area and I always kept coming back to Glen Oaks. The staff and their interaction with the residents was amazing. I also took my mom here before she moved in and she absolutely loved it. They have been doing zoom visits, so they do offer that with your family member which are absolutely wonderful. They are doing everything they can to still keep you in contact and you can call at anytime. My mom since this has never been locked in a room, sequestered away, they have not had any cases in the facility. They have a big courtyard and when it was nice out, they had family members come out and participate in activities with their loved ones. They just have TONS of activities and my mom is always busy doing something.

Bottom of the barrel
This place is a mess and a new fancy remodel will not help turn them around. Staff talks to residents like they are children. All the good staff have pretty much left and I don't blame them. Administrator just sweeps things under the rug or tells you what she thinks you want to here but never addresses concerns. She takes absolutely no responsibility for anything. I never see her out and about the facility. The times I've been there when she is she is just sitting in her office most of the time with the door shut. She will go to family meetings to make a big show and is always super fake during them. I know for a fact that one time a nurse worked a 21 hour shift! When it was mentioned she just shrugged it off and really didn't address it. Makes me wonder how often this happens and makes me fear for resident's safety. Every time I come into visit at night or weekends the residents are just all positioned around the front lobby area staring at each other or parked in front of a TV. Such a sad place.

A Great Move for Mom
This was a great move for Mom! She really is happy at Glen Oaks. She reminds us frequently how nice everyone is there. We think so, too! In addition, the staff is super helpful and interacts so well with their residents. We are always impressed by what we witness between staff and residents and the obvious care and respect that is shared. Mom is safe, healthy and happy. She participates more in activities as they really do a nice job of making them fun and interesting. Her room is bright and sunny and always clean. She likes a little more room, so we were able to find a double room for her and use the extra bedroom space for a living area. She loves it! The facility as a whole looked great already, but is now going through a renovation to spruce it up. Our whole family is very happy with Glen Oaks and Staff! More importantly, Mom is very pleased with her new home!

Extreme Caution.
I noticed that the reviews for Glen Oaks are approximately 2 years old. They do not accurately reflect, in my opinion, the experience that I am having with my relative.
Residents are injured and reports do not get completed. Staff are scared to say anything, because they are afraid of reprisals from management. When you bring a concern forward, you are treated hatefully and in a manner that just demonstrates that they do not care.
There have been a number of inspections into this facility, to respond to complaints. They seem to clean up the complaints long enough to pass whatever inspection they have to pass, and then once the authorities have left, things backslide in the manner in which they were before.
This is a very expensive facility, and it seems to me that there should be a greater amount of care and attention afforded to the residents. Most of what I observed was staff standing around. Even during mealtimes, staff stood in the corner, expecting individuals in the full throes of dementia who could not get their own plate of food to feed themselves. I watched the staff gathered together in the back of the dining room, joking and laughing with one another, while residents begged for their food.
